Learn Premodern MTG

Everything you need to play Premodern Magic: The Gathering. Official rules, legal sets, ban list, and step-by-step guidance.

The Format

What is Premodern MTG?

Premodern is a community-created Magic: The Gathering format using cards printed between 1995 and 2003—from Fourth Edition through Scourge.

The format combines nostalgic cards with modern gameplay rules. You play with old cards but use current rules like the London Mulligan. No mana burn, no damage on the stack—just modern Magic with classic cardboard.

What Makes Premodern Special:
Affordable: Gold-border World Championship cards are legal, cutting costs by 80%+ on expensive staples
Skill-Intensive: Games reward tight play and format knowledge over variance and expensive cards
Growing: Major events draw 200-300 players. MTGO added official support in December 2025
Nostalgic: Play with Lightning Bolt, Counterspell, and Survival of the Fittest

Gold-Border Cards Are Legal

This is Premodern's most important accessibility rule.

Accessibility Feature

Gold-Border Cards Are Legal

This is Premodern's most important accessibility rule.

World Championship deck cards—printed with gold borders from 1997-2004—are fully legal in Premodern tournaments.

These cards have different backs and gold borders, making them illegal in sanctioned Wizards events. But Premodern welcomes them.

This single rule makes the format affordable.

Why It Matters:

Gold-border versions of Reserved List staples cost a fraction of their black-border equivalents. Cards that would cost $300-800 in black border often cost $20-80 in gold border. This means you can play competitive decks without spending thousands of dollars.

Gold Border Savings
Card Black Gold Save
City of Traitors$300+$25-4090%
Gaea's Cradle$800+$80-12085%
Underground Sea$600+$60-10085%
Volcanic Island$500+$50-8085%
Survival of Fittest$150+$20-3085%
Wasteland$25$5-875%
Tournament Policy
Local Meetups
Almost always allowed. Check with organizer.
Regional Events
Usually allowed. Confirm before registering.
Major Championships
Most allow gold border (LobsterCon, Euro Champs do). Some top-level events may require black border.
MTGO
Not applicable—digital cards only.
⚠️ Always confirm gold-border policy with your TO.
Proxies vs Gold Border

These are different things:

Gold Border Cards
Real Magic cards with different borders and backs. Official WotC products from World Championship decks.
Proxies
Printed stand-ins for cards you don't own. Not official products.
Gold border = Always legal in Premodern
?Proxies = Check with your tournament organizer

Many local events allow proxies to lower entry barriers. Larger events typically require real cards.

Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Premodern an official Magic format?

Premodern is community-managed by Martin Berlin, not Wizards of the Coast. However, WotC added Premodern to Magic Online in December 2025, giving it semi-official recognition. The format has its own rules committee and ban list maintained independently.

Is Force of Will legal in Premodern?

No. Force of Will is banned. This is intentional—removing free countermagic makes proactive strategies more viable and reduces blue's dominance. Counters still exist (Counterspell, Daze, Mana Leak), but none are free.

Is Brainstorm legal in Premodern?

No. Brainstorm is banned for providing too much card selection and consistency. This is one of the format's most debated restrictions since the card is iconic to the era, but the ban helps maintain deck diversity.

Can I use cards printed before Fourth Edition?

Only if the card was ALSO printed in a Premodern-legal set. Example: Lightning Bolt exists in Fourth Edition, so your Beta Lightning Bolts are legal. Example: Ancestral Recall was never reprinted in a legal set, so no printing is allowed.

What's the difference between Premodern and Middle School?

Different card pools and ban lists. Premodern: Fourth Edition through Scourge (1995-2003). Middle School: Includes older sets like Fallen Empires and The Dark with different cutoff points. Premodern is more widely played internationally.

Can I play Premodern on MTG Arena?

No. Arena doesn't support cards from this era. Magic Online (MTGO) is the only official digital platform for Premodern. The format launched there in December 2025.

How often does the ban list change?

Rarely—typically once per year at most. Martin Berlin makes changes only when necessary to preserve format health. The January 2026 Parallax Tide ban was the first change since Land Tax was banned in July 2023.

Do I need expensive dual lands to compete?

No. Gold-border dual lands cost $20-80 each instead of $300-600 for black border. Budget mana bases using pain lands (Adarkar Wastes, etc.) or basics also work fine at local events. Start budget, upgrade over time.
