How to play Elves

Most green decks ramp toward one big thing. Premodern Elves ramps toward every thing — and then picks the one that wins. This is a mono-green tribal deck that turns a board of 1/1 mana dorks into a flexible toolbox engine, powered by a card the rest of competitive Magic isn’t allowed to touch: Survival of the Fittest, banned in Legacy since 2010 but fully legal here. The result is one of the highest-ceiling decks in the format, posting a 56.4% overall win rate (5th-best in the format per 2025 DxC data) and roughly a 3.4% metagame share (8th overall), with premier finishes including 3rd-4th at LobsterCon 2025, the largest Premodern event ever held at 279 players.

Game plan

Elves wins by building a self-reinforcing mana engine and then converting that mana into an unanswerable board. The core loop is simple to describe and hard to pilot: cheap dorks like Llanowar Elves and Fyndhorn Elves accelerate into Priest of Titania, which taps for one green mana per Elf in play — including your opponent’s Elves. Quirion Ranger and Wirewood Symbiote untap that Priest repeatedly, and Gaea’s Cradle multiplies every creature on the battlefield into resource advantage. By turn three you can be floating six to ten-plus mana with a board that keeps growing.

What you do with that mana is the deck’s real identity. Survival of the Fittest is the spine: discard any creature, tutor exactly the creature you need. That converts every draw step into a flexible answer and turns the deck into a Swiss Army knife. The kill comes from one of several payoffs depending on the build — a Kamahl, Fist of Krosa overrun, a flood of Deranged Hermit squirrel tokens, a Hunting Pack storm turn, or Natural Order into a fatty like Verdant Force or Phantom Nishoba.

This is best understood as an aggro-combo deck with a toolbox backbone. Unlike Legacy Elves — a dedicated combo deck chaining creatures through Glimpse of Nature and winning with Craterhoof Behemoth — Premodern Elves is slower (turn 3-4 kills versus Legacy’s turn 2-3), more interactive, and far more adaptable. The format gave it resilience instead of raw speed, and that trade defines how it plays.

Why it works in Premodern

Four format-specific factors make this archetype possible, and none of them exist together anywhere else in Magic.

Survival of the Fittest is legal. This is the single biggest differentiator. Discard a creature, find any creature — Anger for haste, Masticore for board control, Caller of the Claw for Wrath insurance, Nantuko Vigilante for artifact and enchantment removal, Wellwisher for lifegain, or a Deranged Hermit for the kill. Paired with Squee, Goblin Nabob, who returns to your hand every upkeep, Survival becomes a free, repeatable tutor engine. There is no fuel cost once Squee is online.

There is no Force of Will. Elves doesn’t have to play around free countermagic the way its Legacy cousin does. Explosive turn-three kills face only hard counters like Counterspell or Mana Leak, and because the mana comes from creatures rather than rituals, the deck powers straight through Daze-style tempo interaction. That structural fact makes Elves stronger against blue decks here than it ever is in Legacy.

Onslaught-block tribal support supplies the chassis. Wirewood Symbiote — bounce an Elf, untap a creature, once per turn — is the second engine alongside Survival. Combined with Multani’s Acolyte, which cantrips on entry, it forms a repeatable draw loop: bounce the Acolyte, replay it, draw a card, untap Priest of Titania. Caller of the Claw gives instant-speed Wrath insurance, Nantuko Vigilante offers morph-based removal that dodges counters, and Tribal Forcemage hides a surprise overrun under a face-down card.

Gaea’s Cradle is the most powerful land in the shell. With four creatures down, Cradle taps for four green. Bounce it with Quirion Ranger and replay it as your land for the turn, and a single Cradle can generate ten or more mana in one turn. The interplay between Cradle, Priest, and the untap effects is the engine that makes turn-three kills real.

On the metagame: the January 18, 2026 ban of Parallax Tide was modestly positive for Elves. Martin Berlin’s ban announcement specifically noted that “a deck like Elves is structurally resilient to the card Parallax Tide” because its mana comes from creatures, not lands. The ban also knocked Replenish — one of Elves’ worse matchups — off its perch. Spike Colony (March 10, 2026) and MTGDecks.net (March 15, 2026) both rate Elves Tier 1. The main emerging concern is the rise of Enchantress builds using an Opalescence plus Parallax Wave lock, which Spike Colony notes are “much better against Elves and Goblins.”

Representative decklist

The list below is Jens “Slayjay” Jaeger’s 3rd-4th place build from the LobsterCon 2025 North American Championship (279 players) — the “prison Elves” configuration featuring Tangle Wire and Rishadan Port instead of a storm finisher. Reproduced exactly as cited in the research dossier.

For contrast, SteB’s 1st-place list from MTGO Premodern Challenge 32 (January 4, 2026) cuts the prison package for a leaner Survival toolbox, adding 2 Karplusan Forest, 2 Sylvan Library, 2 Wall of Blossoms and a Wall of Roots for card selection and aggro defense. Both are “Elves,” and that variance is the point.

Core cards breakdown

The mana engine. Llanowar Elves and Fyndhorn Elves are eight one-mana dorks and the non-negotiable foundation for turn-two Priest or Survival. Priest of Titania (3-4 copies, in 83% of lists) is the explosive payoff — with three-plus Elves out, Priest plus a Quirion Ranger untap generates six or more mana. Quirion Ranger itself (3-4 copies, 92% of lists) returns a Forest to untap a creature, doubles Cradle’s output, and operates under Winter Orb. Wirewood Symbiote (3-4 copies, 83%) returns an Elf to untap a creature once per turn and pairs with Multani’s Acolyte (3-4 copies, 81%) for a repeatable draw-and-mana loop.

The engine spells. Survival of the Fittest (4 copies, 98% of lists) is the deck’s defining card. Squee, Goblin Nabob (1 copy, 98%) returns each upkeep as infinite Survival fuel and also sustains Masticore’s upkeep cost. Both are core.

Finishers and payoffs. Deranged Hermit (2-3 copies, 98%) makes four 1/1 squirrels (2/2 with the Hermit out) and turbo-charges Cradle; bounce it with Symbiote before its echo to replay for more tokens. Kamahl, Fist of Krosa (1 copy, 43%) is a triple threat — an overrun finisher, Wrath insurance by animating the opponent’s lands into creatures so a sweeper destroys their mana, and a Cradle multiplier. Michael Flores considers it “un-cuttable.” Hunting Pack (4 copies in storm builds) is the storm kill — a storm count of 5-7 puts 24-32 power on the board. Natural Order (in some builds) fetches Verdant Force, Phantom Nishoba (a beating against Burn), or Woodripper. Anger (1 copy, 85%) grants team-wide haste from the graveyard with a Mountain in play, and Masticore (1 copy, 92%) machine-guns small creatures while Squee pays its upkeep.

Utility silver bullets. Nantuko Vigilante (1-2, 94%) is counter-dodging morph removal. Yavimaya Granger (1 copy, 74%) is an echo land-fetcher and good Survival target. Druid Lyrist destroys enchantments and — critically — is a Druid, not an Elf, so it survives Engineered Plague naming Elves. Wellwisher (1 copy, 34%) gains life equal to your Elves. Goblin Sharpshooter and Thornscape Battlemage round out the red-touch toolbox.

Lands. Gaea’s Cradle (4 copies, 96%) is the most powerful card in the deck. Wooded Foothills (4, 87%) fetches a Mountain for Anger or a basic Forest while thinning the deck. A single Mountain (87%) enables Anger and the red splash, and Rishadan Port appears in prison builds for mana denial.

How to play

The acceleration curve is predictable; the decision tree branching off it is not.

Turn 1: Forest into Llanowar Elves or Fyndhorn Elves. This is the bread and butter. Without a turn-one dork, you are a full turn behind and should have considered mulliganing.

Turn 2: The critical fork. With Gaea’s Cradle, play it (tapping for 1-2 alongside your Elf) and deploy Priest of Titania plus another cheap creature. Without Cradle, play a Forest and cast Survival of the Fittest or Priest. A turn-two Survival is often better than a turn-two Priest, because it guarantees you find whatever you need on the following turns.

Turn 3: The explosion. With Priest and three-plus Elves, use Quirion Ranger (bounce Forest, untap Priest) and Wirewood Symbiote (bounce an Elf, untap Priest) to float six to ten-plus mana. Deploy a Deranged Hermit — five more bodies feeding Cradle — cast Hunting Pack off a high storm count, or set up a Kamahl, Fist of Krosa overrun.

Survival tutor chains are the heart of the matchup-by-matchup play. The Anger chain: find Anger, discard it to Survival (now live in the graveyard), find a Kamahl, Fist of Krosa or Deranged Hermit, attack immediately. The Squee engine: find Squee, Goblin Nabob, and from the next upkeep onward discard him to Survival every turn for free tutoring forever. The toolbox chain: against a specific problem, find the bullet — Nantuko Vigilante for artifacts and enchantments, Caller of the Claw for an incoming sweeper, Masticore in creature mirrors, Wellwisher when racing Burn. The Genesis grind: discard Genesis and return a creature from the yard each upkeep — paired with Druid Lyrist, that’s repeatable enchantment destruction.

The untap loops are where the skill ceiling lives. Quirion Ranger bounces a Forest to untap any creature; the key trick is tapping Cradle, bouncing it with Ranger, replaying it as your land drop, and tapping again — effectively doubling Cradle. Ranger also bypasses Winter Orb by bouncing a tapped land and replaying it untapped. Wirewood Symbiote bounces an Elf to untap a creature: bounce Multani’s Acolyte, replay it to draw, untap Priest. Combine them — bounce Ranger with Symbiote, replay Ranger, untap Priest again — to triple Priest’s output in a turn. Each Ranger and each Symbiote is once-per-turn, so track which copies have activated. The BANDING newsletter even advises your opponents to “keep track of which Quirion Rangers/Wirewood Symbiotes have used their abilities” — so you must too.

Mulligan guide

There’s no formally published mulligan guide, but tournament-report consensus is clear.

Keep any hand with at least one mana dork (Llanowar Elves or Fyndhorn Elves) and at least one land. A hand with Survival of the Fittest plus a creature or two is keepable even without the fastest start, because Survival converts almost any position into a plan. The dream is a turn-one dork, a turn-two Priest or Survival, a green source, and one payoff or engine piece — Forest plus Llanowar Elves plus Gaea’s Cradle plus Priest of Titania is approaching unbeatable.

Ship hands with no lands, all-land hands with no creatures, and hands full of expensive cards with no acceleration. Watch for two specific traps: a hand with multiple Cradles but no Forest (Cradle makes zero mana with no creatures out), and a pile of dorks with no payoffs — the deck can flood on dorks and “start topdecking turn 3/4 without making an impact.” Natural Order targets like Verdant Force stuck in hand without Natural Order are also dead weight. As Anton Glans put it in a tournament report, “I find all the mana elves in the world, along with all the Forests in the world. Without any action spells, the black shadows, zombies and horrors win quite easily.”

The deck mulligans moderately well precisely because Survival rescues creature-heavy five-card hands. Against red, dig for hate (Wall of Blossoms, Steely Resolve); against combo, prioritize raw speed.

Sideboard guide

The board divides into enchantment/artifact hate, anti-aggro tools, graveyard hate, and grind pieces. Naturalize (3-4) is the non-negotiable backbone — it answers Phyrexian Dreadnought, Oath of Druids, Engineered Plague, Enchantress permanents, and Replenish targets. Call of the Herd (3-4) is the transformational plan: 3/3 Elephants survive Engineered Plague naming Elves, block red creatures, and grind out control. Caller of the Claw, Wall of Blossoms, Tormod’s Crypt, Wellwisher, Genesis, Winter Orb, and Druid Lyrist fill specific roles.

Concrete plans, drawn from Michael Flores’s documented mapping:

  • Vs. Stiflenought (favorable): IN 3 Naturalize, 1 Uktabi Orangutan; OUT 1 Kamahl, Fist of Krosa, 1 Masticore, 1 Caller of the Claw, 1 Multani’s Acolyte. The matchup is about killing Phyrexian Dreadnought and Powder Keg; expensive cards are too slow.
  • Vs. Enchantress (getting harder): IN 3 Naturalize, 1 Druid Lyrist, 1 Genesis; OUT 1 Masticore, 3 Thornscape Battlemage, 1 Caller of the Claw. Parallax Wave exiles creatures, so Caller is dead — set up the Druid Lyrist plus Genesis plus Anger recursion loop instead.
  • Vs. Engineered Plague decks (Psychatog, The Rock): IN 4 Call of the Herd, 1 Druid Lyrist, 1 Genesis, 3 Naturalize; OUT 3 Quirion Ranger, 1 Kamahl, Fist of Krosa, 1 Deranged Hermit, 3 Thornscape Battlemage, 1 Masticore. Maximize non-Elf threats; Elvish Champion also offsets one Plague.
  • Vs. Sligh/Burn (unfavorable): IN Wall of Blossoms, Wellwisher, Call of the Herd, possibly Spike Feeder and Steely Resolve; OUT Tangle Wire, Kamahl, and other high-cost cards. Survive first.
  • Vs. Reanimator: IN 2-3 Tormod’s Crypt, Naturalize; OUT slow toolbox cards. Race while disrupting.

Matchup notes

Goblins (~30/70, your worst matchup). This is the wall. Goblin Sharpshooter machine-guns every 1/1 Elf, dismantling both your board and your mana base at once. Flores calls it “completely untenable,” and even Natural Order into Phantom Nishoba doesn’t reliably stabilize — he recounts attacking with both Nishoba and Verdant Force and still losing. The Mengucci midrange line (Wall of Roots, Call of the Herd, double Masticore post-board) has shown better results, going 2-1 against Goblins at Italian Nationals. Sideboard Pyroclasm and your own Goblin Sharpshooter help, but respect that this is uphill.

Blue control / Landstill (favorable). Spike Colony notes Elves is “especially good” against blue-based control. Your creature mana sidesteps the tempo advantage of Counterspell and Mana Leak, and Survival of the Fittest finds threats faster than control finds answers. Against the broader Stiflenought shell, Elves goes under the interaction — Phil Nguyen notes it “had one of the best conversion rates” at last year’s event, with 3 of 4 pilots reaching Top 32.

Enchantress (shifting from favorable to even-or-worse). Historical DxC data showed 70/30 in Elves’ favor, but Flores argues that’s obsolete — he went “0-3 against SWB’s Enchantress in one week, winning only one game out of seven.” The new Opalescence plus Parallax Wave builds specifically punish creature swarms by exiling them, which is why Caller of the Claw is dead here and the Druid Lyrist plus Genesis recursion plan matters so much.

Burn/Sligh (unfavorable, not hopeless). A single uncontested Grim Lavamancer can shut the deck off, and your low land count plus 1-toughness creatures are structurally exposed. But Wellwisher with Anger for haste can swing a race, and Wall of Blossoms plus Call of the Herd firm things up post-board. Flores reckons the matchup “is overrated for the Red Deck.”

Replenish (~40/60) softened after the Parallax Tide ban weakened the deck, though Parallax Wave exiling your team still makes game one awkward.

Budget version and upgrade path

Be honest with yourself: Elves is one of Premodern’s most expensive decks. Full competitive black-border builds run roughly $5,000-6,000 in paper (per MTGGoldfish 2026 data), or 125-250 tix on MTGO. The cost is almost entirely Reserved List cards — Gaea’s Cradle at ~$800+ per copy, Survival of the Fittest at ~$180-264, plus Deranged Hermit and Masticore.

The realistic entry path:

  • Step 1 (~$200-400): Build the non-Reserved core. The dorks, Priest of Titania, Quirion Ranger, Wirewood Symbiote, Multani’s Acolyte, the Onslaught-block cards, and Wooded Foothills are all cheap.
  • Step 2 (~$150-600): Acquire Survival of the Fittest — gold-border around $144 a playset, black border $720-1,056.
  • Step 3 (~$520-3,200): Acquire Gaea’s Cradle — gold-border around $520 a playset, black border $3,200+.
  • Step 4 (~$50-150): Fill in Deranged Hermit, Masticore, and the rest.

The big lever is gold-border (World Championship Deck) cards, accepted at many events when allowed by the TO and used in opaque sleeves; Premodern Online Monthlies explicitly allow them. A gold-border Cradle (Matt Linde’s 1999 deck) drops to ~$130 per copy and gold-border Survival to ~$36, saving roughly $3,500-4,000 versus black border. That brings a tournament-legal Elves deck down to roughly $800-1,000 all-in.

If even that is out of reach, the Biorhythm aggro variant skips both Cradle and Survival: Collective Unconscious for cards, Biorhythm and Overrun as finishers, and Elvish Champion as a lord. Anton Glans pioneered it at the 2019 GothCon Easter Championship; Martin Berlin notes it enables “turn 3 goldfish wins” but is “more fragile” than the Survival build. You trade the toolbox for raw speed and a far lower price tag.

FAQ

Is Craterhoof Behemoth legal in Premodern? No. It’s from Avacyn Restored (2012), well outside the Fourth Edition–Scourge pool. Your finishers are Kamahl, Fist of Krosa, Deranged Hermit tokens, Hunting Pack, and Natural Order into Verdant Force or Phantom Nishoba.

Do I really need Gaea’s Cradle? Practically, yes — Gaea’s Cradle appears in 96% of competitive lists (average 3.7 copies). Gold-border copies at ~$130 are the best budget compromise. Without it, play the Biorhythm aggro variant, which leans less on explosive mana.

Is Elves hard to play? It has one of the highest skill ceilings in the format. Tracking Quirion Ranger and Wirewood Symbiote activations (once per turn each), sequencing Survival of the Fittest chains, and doing Gaea’s Cradle math under a clock are genuinely difficult. Phil Nguyen calls it one of the “highest ceiling decks in Premodern.”

How does Elves beat Engineered Plague? Through cards that aren’t Elves: Druid Lyrist (a Druid), Elvish Champion (the +1/+1 offsets the -1/-1), Naturalize, Call of the Herd, and Wall of Roots for non-Elf mana.

Hunting Pack or Tangle Wire? Hunting Pack is a dedicated combo kill that ends games in one explosive turn; Tangle Wire slows the opponent while you build. Prison builds have the better major-event results (Jaeger’s LobsterCon Top 4), but Hunting Pack dominates MTGO where fast kills punish unfamiliar opponents. Choose for your metagame.
